Exhibitions in New York (6-11 March 2024)

On my recent trip to New York City, more specifically Manhatten, I also took the opportunity to view a work by Chow and Lin from their “Poverty Line” series, which MoMA had acquired, a great honour for a Singaporean art collective. This work featured tomatoes as the device for communicating their messages on relative wealth and deprivation.We also spent time at other museums. The Big Apple and New York City have never been a preferred travel destination for me. I was turned off when I saw the Vanderbilt houses in Newport, Rhode Island in the late 1990s and thought “Oh dear, emigrants just trying to recreate their former lives in Europe in their new land of greener pastures. At best, America is just a carbon copy of what Europe once was”. NLB Book Club’s conversation about Robert Yeo’s memoirs Routes 2 (24 January, NLB) I had gone to the launch of the second part of Robert’s memoirs, by Prof Wang Gungwu on 18 November 2023.
