For the vino-lovers in our little group of fourteen, Brunello wine from the Montalcino region was the much-anticipated highlight of their “Hidden Tuscany” tour.  For this sulphides, gluten and dairy-intolerant traveler, food wasn’t the thing on this trip.  It was a chance to get to know “old”Italybehind the “modern” music of Puccini and Verdi and to walk the medieval “Via Francigina” pathways.  Via Francigina starts in Canterbury in Englandand continues through France into Italy taking pilgrims of old on foot or horse, to Rome and thereon, to Jerusalem. Prague Memories (7 – 10 Aug 2011)

Until the last 15  years or so, Eastern Europe was not considered a “safe” tourist destination for unadventurous “kiasu” travelers like myself.  It was Lena St George Sweet (now Mrs Hamish SGS Brown) who first urged me to visit it, knowing of my love of heritage buildings. Mozart & Vivaldi (Prague, 8-10 Aug 2011) by PaulT

Mozartissimo (8 Aug 2011, Estates Theatre, Prague) I wanted to listen to Mozart in the theatre, which premiered “Don Giovanni“. The theatre has a wonderful atmosphere but this show was more suitable for a casual tourist.  The three costumed musicians were very competent accompanists to excerpts from Don Giovanni, Marriage of Figaro, Abduction form the Seraglio and the Magic Flute. The single soprano sang Cherubino, Susanna, Zerlina, Blonda, Papagena and Pamina competently. The sole male baritone sang Figaro, Don Giovanni, Osmin and Papageno and did not cope.
